Workshops on the Use of Bioinformatics Tools

HSLS currently offers a series of three classes on the use of molecular biology and genetics resources. Workshops are held in the Falk Library CMC Classrooms. Each of the workshops is three hours in length and divided into two parts. Part I (2 hours) includes a lecture and Power Point presentation, while Part II (1 hour) provides an opportunity for hands-on learning. For information regarding when these workshops will be offered, visit <www.hsls.pitt.edu/guides/genetics> and check Upcoming Classes.

Provides a general overview of the molecular biology and genetics resources available through selected Web-based public databases. Special emphasis is given to National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) resources.

Covers the use of sequence similarity searching tools, including BLAST, to find statistically significant matches from sequence databases to a protein or nucleic acid squence.

Covers major Web-based bioinformatics software for nucleotide and protein analysis including: restriction mapping, sequence alignment, PCR primer analysis and Expert Protein Analysis System (EXPASY) Proteomics tools.
