Patricia Mickelson Retires as HSLS Director
On September 2, 2003, Mickelson, Patricia ends her 17-year tenure as director of the Health Sciences Library System. During her years at the University, Pat oversaw the formation of the Health Sciences Library System and its development into one of the foremost academic health sciences libraries in the country.
Pat grew up in South Dakota, and received degrees from South Dakota State University and Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State University). Before she came to Pittsburgh in 1986, her career included positions of increasing responsibility at the Kansas Regional Medical Program, Medical College of Georgia, Johns Hopkins University, and University of Maryland. She has been active in the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries, where she held the offices of president, member of the Board of Directors, and chair of the Future Leadership Task Force.
Pat is looking forward to spending more time with her husband on their farm in Greene County, where she gardens, and raises cattle and horses. She notes “I am very excited about retiring and redirecting my energies to other pursuits. At the same time, I have regrets about leaving a great staff , a great library, and a great University. I have had a wonderful career at Pitt, and am most appreciative of the support I have received.”
A search committee, co-chaired by Thomas Detre, M.D., distinguished service professor of the Health Sciences and Barbara Barnes, M.D., assistant vice chancellor for Continuing Education, has been appointed to identify a new HSLS director. Barbara Epstein, currently associate director, will serve as interim director.
