Library Orientation......finding your way

HSLS librarians provide many options for orienting new students, residents, faculty, and staff to library information resources and services

It’s that time of year when faculty members, administrators, and staff are preparing for an influx of new people coming to the University and UPMC. HSLS librarians provide many options for orienting new students, residents, faculty, and staff to the library information resources and services available to them.

To request more information about any of the possibilities presented here, call the Reference department at 412-648-8796 or send an e-mail to medlibq@pitt.edu.

One-Page Orientation
10 Things You Need to Know to Get Started at HSLS is available for download as a handout that we encourage you to include as part of your group’s standard orientation information. HSLS librarians can also tailor this handout upon request for your group. It is available at www.hsls.pitt.edu/guides/factsheet/10things.pdf.

Customized Packets
Librarians can create a customized folder of handouts about library resources and services. Handout topics cover HSLS in general, remote access, document delivery, individual databases, and many other subjects.

Brief Orientations and/or Tours
Librarians can provide an overview of information resources and services to your group, either in the library or at your location. We can come to orientation events, classes, or department meetings, and can be as brief or as thorough as your time permits.

Customized Training
Librarians can provide database-specific or subject-specific training to your group. For a list of training possibilities, see www.hsls.pitt.edu/services/instruction/desc. If you don’t find what you need, we can create a class for you. Training can be in the form of a single brief session, a day-long workshop, or a customized program of multiple HSLS classes over a period of time.

Consultations

If you have new faculty, doctoral students, or others who need to become very familiar with the library and proficient at literature searches, you can arrange for them to have an individual consultation with a librarian to assure they are aware of the resources specific to their work.
