Renae Barger has been appointed head of Access Services.  Barger has been at HSLS since 2002, first as a reference librarian and then as document delivery coordinator.  Her new responsibilities include oversight of technology and procedures to provide access to library resources, including services in interlibrary loan, photocopy, circulation, memberships, and stacks management.

Leslie Czechowski has been appointed head of Collection Services, with responsibility for collection development and analysis, selection of materials in all formats, vendor relations, and licensing of electronic resources.  Czechowski has worked at HSLS since August 2005, first as manuscripts librarian and then as collections librarian.

Gosia Fort has been appointed head of Technical Services.  In this position, she oversees cataloging, acquisitions, serials management, and materials processing.  Fort joined HSLS in 1999 as the cataloging and database maintenance librarian, and was promoted to head of Bibliographic Services in 2004.

Linda Hartman, reference librarian, has been elected HSLS’ representative in the Faculty Assembly of the University Senate. Hartman’s three-year term began in July.

Carrie Iwema joined HSLS as a Molecular Biology information specialist.  Iwema earned a BS degree from Indiana University and a PhD in neuroscience from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University, and was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Neurosurgery at Yale University.  After earning an MLS degree from Southern Connecticut State University, she worked at Welch Medical Library at Johns Hopkins University as basic science librarian.

John LaDue has been appointed lead developer and will act as the project manager for the HSLS Web application team.  LaDue began at HSLS in 2005 as a Computer and Media Center help desk assistant and was promoted to systems analyst in 2006.

John Siegel, reference librarian, was appointed co-chair of the American Library Association's New Members Round Table Student and Student Chapter Outreach Committee.

Angela Zack joined HSLS as a systems programmer.  Previously, Zack owned her own Web design business.  Zack will be joining the HSLS development team to work on Web-based applications.


PUBLICATIONS

Jonathon Erlen, history of medicine librarian, published "Recent Dissertations of Interest to Historians of Technology," History and Technology, 22(3): 327-3303, 2006 and "A Quantitative Profile of the Patent Medicine Industry in Baltimore from 1863 to 1930," Pharmacy in History, 49(1): 15-27, 2007 with coauthor Michael Torbenson, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.


PRESENTATIONS

Jonathon Erlen, history of medicine librarian, presented a talk, "Factors in the Decline of the Doctor Patient Relationship: From the Mythical Golden Age to the Present," at the Institute for Medicine in Contemporary Society, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, Stony Brook N.Y., on June 6, 2007.

Nancy Tannery, associate director of User Services, presented a poster titled, "Libraries in Medical Education Special Interest Group of the NEGEA", at the 2007 annual educational retreat of the Northeast Group on Educational Affairs, June 8-9, 2007, in Stony Brook, N.Y.  The poster was co-authored with Lauren Maggio, Alumni Medical Library, Boston University; Lora Thompson, Dartmouth Biomedical Libraries; Len Levin, Lamar Soutter Library, University of Massachusetts; and Julia Whelan, Countway Library of Medicine, Harvard University.
