The University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences Library System (HSLS) seeks applications for the position of Network and Advocacy Coordinator, National Network of Libraries of Medicine – Middle Atlantic Region (NN/LM-MAR). We are looking for an energetic, creative and service-oriented librarian interested in collaboration, teamwork, and innovation.
NN/LM-MAR, recently relocated to the University of Pittsburgh, is funded through a five-year contract (2011-2016) with the National Library of Medicine (NLM), and functions administratively as a unit of HSLS. The Middle Atlantic Region, one of eight in the country, includes the states of Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania This position will be one of a team of four librarian-coordinators reporting to the MAR Executive Director, who together will build a strong program to facilitate resource sharing and cooperative projects among a network of over 700 health sciences libraries and resource centers, including academic medical libraries, hospital libraries, public libraries with consumer health collections, and college and university libraries with health sciences programs. MAR librarian coordinators will direct outreach efforts to librarians, health information professionals and consumers. Programs will be developed to promote the changing role of librarians within their institutions and communities. Other outreach programs will be developed, often in partnership with network libraries and other regional organizations, to assist health professionals without a health sciences library affiliation and consumers who are seeking sources of reliable health information. MAR outreach activities include consultation and funding for programs to enhance access to health information, conference exhibits, classes on health information topics and training on NLM databases and resources, including PubMed and MedlinePlus.
Responsibilities of the Network and Advocacy Coordinator include planning Network member programs to support advocacy and changing roles for the information professional; coordinating outreach activities to hospital librarians; managing the Region's Membership and DOCLINE program; and providing training and support of DOCLINE, DOCLINE Serial Holdings, EFTS, and LinkOut.
Specific responsibilities are as follows:- Interacts with and builds relationships with Network members and potential members; promotes the benefits of NN/LM membership and Network member involvement in MAR programs
- Coordinates Regional library advocacy programs, including identifying opportunities to promote librarians in hospitals and health care settings and devising training and programs to advocate for hospital libraries
- Maintains knowledge of tools and resources available to increase awareness of the value of libraries and librarians to hospital administrators and health care professionals
- Explores new roles for information professionals
- Provides support, advocacy, training and consultation for hospital librarians
- Serves as the primary staff contact and provides support to the Special Advisory Group on Hospital Libraries
- Promotes and solicits awards for projects to advocate for the role of information professionals within the institution and/or community; monitors progress and follow-up for awards in progress
- Serves as regional needs assessment and evaluation liaison for information professional advocacy programs
- Leads the MAR membership drive and needs assessment
- Administers the Region's DOCLINE and DOCLINE Serial Holdings programs, ensuring accuracy of member information in the directory
- Encourages use of DOCLINE and EFTS by proactively contacting eligible full and associate network members, and provides consultation to librarians on its implementation and use
- Works with libraries to resolve technical or administrative problems with DOCLINE, DOCLINE Serial Holdings, EFTS, LinkOut and Loansome Doc, and follows-up on all requests for training and assistance
- Identifies libraries that may need assistance in improving interlibrary loan services
- Maintains awareness of new document delivery/ILL trends and technologies
- Plans and coordinates library network enhancement and cooperative library programs
- Promotes and solicits resource sharing incentive awards; monitors progress and follow-up for awards in progress
- Serves as regional needs assessment and evaluation liaison for resource sharing initiatives
- Develops in-person or online workshops and training sessions, in coordination with other MAR staff
- Provides information and consultation on funding and awards
- Consults with the NN/LM Outreach Evaluation Resource Center and other NN/LM Regions, and provides training/consultation on developing and applying effective evaluation techniques for outgoing awards
- Attends NLM teleconferences and provides regular feedback to NLM on problems or concerns of MAR members
- Contributes articles as appropriate to the MAR Newsletter
- Participates in exhibits as needed
- Maintains standards of accessibility for all resources created and maintained. Accessibility must be in accordance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act
- MLS from ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent advanced degree
- Demonstrated knowledge of challenges faced by librarians, especially hospital librarians
- Experience with DOCLINE, DOCLINE Serial Holdings, and related technology
- Familiarity with NLM and NN/LM programs
- Demonstrated skills in oral and written communication, project management, and problem-solving
- Experience in teaching workshops and/or seminars
- Proficiency in software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as Web-based applications
- Willingness to travel; valid driver’s license at the time of employment
- Flexibility and ability to manage competing priorities
- Strong service orientation and ability to work effectively with colleagues, health professionals and consumers in a diverse, multi-cultural community
Preference will be given to candidates with health sciences backgrounds and/or experience in health sciences libraries.
