The University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences Library System (HSLS) seeks applications for the position of Technology and Communication Coordinator, National Network of Libraries of Medicine – Middle Atlantic Region (NN/LM-MAR). We are looking for an energetic, creative and service-oriented librarian interested in collaboration, teamwork, and innovation.
NN/LM-MAR, recently relocated to the University of Pittsburgh, is funded through a five-year contract (2011-2016) with the National Library of Medicine (NLM), and functions administratively as a unit of HSLS. The Middle Atlantic Region, one of eight in the country, includes the states of Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania This position will be one of a team of four librarian-coordinators reporting to the MAR Executive Director, who together will build a strong program to facilitate resource sharing and cooperative projects among a network of over 700 health sciences libraries and resource centers, including academic medical libraries, hospital libraries, public libraries with consumer health collections, and college and university libraries with health sciences programs. MAR librarian coordinators will also provide outreach programs, often in partnership with network libraries and other regional organizations, to assist health professionals without a health sciences library affiliation and consumers who are seeking sources of reliable health information. MAR outreach activities include consultation and funding for programs to enhance access to health information, conference exhibits, classes on health information topics and training on NLM databases and resources, including PubMed and MedlinePlus.
This position is focused on providing support for MAR technology and online communication.
Specific responsibilities are as follows:- Develops and maintains the MAR Website using the most effective technology for communication and education
- Provides leadership and consultation to the MAR staff and network members for identification and evaluation of technology for regional programs
- Manages MAR listservs, electronic newsletter(s), blogs and other online communication mechanisms
- In coordination with other MAR staff, develops a communication strategy to ensure that Network members and others in the Region are fully informed about MAR activities, award opportunities and other initiatives
- Serves as point person for desktop computer management for the MAR staff, interacting with HSLS computer services staff to ensure that MAR technology is integrated into HSLS computing environment
- Monitors current technological and policy development and trends to identify those that will improve access to biomedical information and provides updates about these for Network members
- Serves as liaison to the NN/LM South Central Region (MAR’s “buddy” region) for the NN/LM Emergency Preparedness Response Plan
- Serves as primary contact for MAR Technology Awards
- Provides information and consultation on funding and awards for technology; monitors progress and follow-up for awards in progress
- Serves as regional needs assessment and evaluation liaison for technology initiatives
- Consults with the NN/LM Outreach Evaluation Resource Center, and other NN/LM regions, and provides training/consultation on developing and applying effective evaluation techniques for technology awards
- Consults with NN/LM Web Services and Technology Center (Web-STOC)
- Serves as the primary staff contact and provides support to the Special Advisory Group on Resource and Academic Libraries
- Provides consultation to ensure that outreach and other program awards have realistic objectives and implementation plans for technology, and that funding requests related to technology are appropriate
- Develops classes, workshops, newsletter articles, blog postings, etc. on the use of technology in health sciences libraries, and teaches MAR workshops as needed
- Coordinates technology testing programs for the Region in coordination with other MAR staff
- Contributes articles as appropriate to the MAR Newsletter
- Serves as backup in the absence of the MAR Administrator for monitoring and forwarding “ContactMAR” inquiries
- Participates in exhibits as needed
- Maintains standards of accessibility for all resources created and maintained. Accessibility must be in accordance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act
- MLS from ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent advanced degree
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with web development applications, scripting languages, and web usability techniques
- Demonstrated knowledge of online communication techniques
- Familiarity with Section 508 compliance
- Ability to develop collaborative relationships with diverse groups, manage multiple projects, and work successfully with both technical and non-technical people
- Familiarity with NLM and NN/LM programs
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Experience in teaching workshops and/or seminars
- Ability to plan and implement programs and prioritize projects
- Willingness to travel; valid driver’s license at the time of employment
- Strong service orientation and ability to work effectively with colleagues, health professionals and consumers in a diverse, multi-cultural community
Preference will be given to candidates with health sciences backgrounds and/or experience in health sciences libraries.
