This physically magnificent volume marks the beginning of modern human anatomy. Prior to this book physicians learned their human anatomy by memorizing incorrect anatomical writings.
Vesalius, through his careful dissections of human cadavers, was able to correct many of the mistakes that appeared in previous anatomical texts. The beautiful artwork that accompanies Vesalius's text was done in the shop of the master Renaissance artist Titian by one of his apprentices, Stephen Kalcar.
