...discover the domain architecture for a specific protein, and other proteins with similar domains?

Question

What is the protein domain architecture for fragile X syndrome in humans?
Do any other proteins have similar domains?

Steps
Things to do
1
POINT your browser to the NCBI Entrez Gene Web page.
2
TYPE ìfragile X syndromeî in the text search box at the top of the page.
3

Under the text search box, you will find multiple tabs, such as Limits, Preview/Index, History, etc. CLICK the Limits tab.
4
From Limit by Taxonomy SELECT ìHomo sapiensî to narrow the search.
5
CLICK the GO button next to the text search box at the top of the page.
6
From the list of results SELECT FMR1 to go to its Entrez Gene page.
7

LOCATE the section titled Genomic regions, transcripts, and products to find the protein RefSeq name (NP_002015.1).
8
CLICK on NP_002015.1 and SELECT ìConserved Domainsî.
9
CLICK the Search for similar domain architectures button.

Result
  • You will be taken to a new page for CDART (Conserved Domain Architecture Retrieval Tool).
  • The structure of the original sequence (NP_002015, FMR1) is listed at the top of the page.
  • Multiple pages of sequences with domain architecture features similar to human FMR1 are also listed.
  • You may refine your search by choosing subsets based on taxonomy or selected domains.
