HSLS electronic resources are available to students, faculty, and staff of the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). The University of Pittsburgh libraries have negotiated licenses with publishers, providers, and/or their agents to provide access to electronic resources. These licenses constitute binding, legal contracts that define specific rights and restrictions regarding access and use of the electronic resources to which they apply. License terms may supersede rights accorded under the fair use provisions of U.S. Copyright Law.
Some licenses further restrict access according to geographical location or organizational structure. For example, many resources are available only to users on the Oakland campus, and others are available only to University of Pittsburgh users.
Authorized users may use electronic resources for research, study, and teaching. Specific rights and restrictions vary. Licenses typically prohibit: systematic downloading or redistribution of content; copying or tampering with the software that organizes and displays information; and removal or alteration of the copyright holder's ownership marks. All commercial uses, i.e., uses for purposes of monetary gain, are prohibited.
Providers monitor the use of their electronic resources. License violations may result in interruption or cancellation of service and loss of library and/or computer privileges.
The information providers and HSLS offer electronic resources on an "as is" basis. They do not warrant accuracy or completeness of data or availability of storage and delivery devices.
