Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564) Flemish anatomist, who studied at universities in Leuven, Paris and Padua, where he received his doctoral degree and, afterwards he was giving anatomical demonstrations as the appointed lecturer in surgery. He revolutionized the study of biology and the practice of medicine by his careful description of the anatomy of the human body. Basing his observations on dissections he made himself, he wrote and illustrated the first comprehensive textbook of anatomy. After publishing his revolutionary work De humani corporis fabrica in 1543, he returned to Belgium and practiced medicine in Brussels. As a physician to Roman Emperor Charles V, he traveled in Europe with the court. He served also as one of the physicians of his son, Philip II in Mardrid. He died on his trip to Jerusalem.
